The historical impression of Viking invaders leaves an impression of a hoard of bloodthirsty barbarians, but the truth is more down to earth. While many invaders were quite viscious, only the leader was actually the Viking (from the Norse "Venerable sea captain"). And as any visitor to our lands, they originally came with gifts, but one of them being fire did not go down well with the straw huts that were fashionable at the time. Those brave enough to try and store the gift soon found they had bitten off more than they could chew.
