The stovepipe hat was at the centre of a roaring controversy in the early 1920s after several members of the house of commons suggested that women be allowed to wear the hats (specifically any type of mens hat, but stovepipe being the main fashion at the time). The motion was voted out after an extraordinary filibuster by Dr. M Martins, later summed up in the popular song "What's she gonna look like with a chimney on her?".
