Room To Swing A Cat

Although used as a popular phrase ("there's not enough room to swing a cat in here!") to comment on the size of a room, it was a stipulation in shipbuilding that cabins must have enough room to swing a cat. What is less commonly known, is that the cat was to be swung vertically, allowing for very narrow (yet tall) rooms.
