In April 1976, a tragic road accident occurred on the eastbound carriageway of the M62, killing all four members of the popular soul band The Good Intentions. Their minibus collided with a heavy goods vehicle and overturned, ejecting its passengers at high speed.

Police commented in their report on the scene of carnage, that "the road to Hull was paved with Good Intentions".
