Ironically, Hip flasks were popular right up to the advent of the 70's, when they fell into disfavour, and regained the popularity they now enjoy part way through the 80's.
Indeed, hip flasks did not get their name from the venacular "hip" (as in trendy) but from their inventor, Kenneth Hip.
