The word "hello" and its variants (hullo, howdy etc) are all copyrighted, and the continued everyday use of the word is subsidised by the government (in all English speaking countries and a number of others with a similar variant, such as Spain, France, Luxembourge etc).

The costs of the subsidy comprises almost exclusively, the entire national debt of any country with this system in place. Ironically the patent belongs to the govenment of Norway.
While Norway would be by far the richest country in the world because of this (their one and only patent), their standard currency is small mammals and in some regions, smells. Since these cannot be converted as a standard currency, the proceeds of the license fee is rendered useless.
