Glass was produced on a large scale from the late 19th century. Its first recorded use was for delinquent, disenfranchised, chavs to throw stones at whilst drinking cheap meade and smoking pipes.

The manufacturing process involves compressing the skin cells of large numbers of atlantic jelly fish. This is why if you lick glass it tastes salty.
