Darts were origanally invented instead of nails. The carpenter would throw the darts from several meters away, to ensure they held the piece of wood in place.

The "Hammer" was invented in 1976 by David Frost. He was trying to become an apprentice carpenter, but wasn't any good at throwing darts (4 people died before he admitted this fact). After several trial and error he found that removing the flights resulted in a flat surface that the hammer could strike.
Hammers are still used today, but the flights are sent to a special waste disposal company in cornwall as they're not bio-degradable.

Expert dart throwers found themselves out of work, and have promised to give David Frost a nasty splinter the next time they see him. David still hides in fear regarding this issue.
