Copper
The name copper comes from the well known practice of throwing small change at policemen (coppers). The small change was then named copper instead of kjhjyth (greek for brown metal) which is rather hard to pronounce.
The practice of throwing money at policemen is still practised today, and is considered good luck if you can hit them in the face.
