Cement
One of the single most important discoveries in construction is that cement can panic. When cement panics, it sets harder and faster than usual.
Prior to 1962 cement would often take several days to dry which led to it being used almost solely as a flooring material. After Sir Humphrey Discovered his patented method of cement panicking in the early 60's however, it became possible to build grotesque high-rise flats which would solidify overnight without dripping much.
The current best known cement panicking catalyst is a monologue on general moral decline.
