When waiting for a bus in England, it is considered improper, even if you know the fare, to make any preparation before embarking the bus. People will be quite happy to wait in line when you suddenly remember you have to pay, and spend 5 minutes finding the exact change.
If this procedure is not strictly adhered to, the bus service risks the danger of running on time.
