Aces
The first 'Flying Ace', Terry Wogan, was so called bacause he managed to shoot down 1 enemy plane during World War I. Previous to this, no-one had managed it, as the prevailing technique was to fly as close as possibe and shoot a pistol at the enemy pilot.
This was opposed to the far more popular dogfighting method, which lasted until they figured out how to fire a machine gun through propellors without damaging the plane.
